Cultural Competence

ONN is built and centered on liberation, and we are here to partner with you in that pursuit. We recognize that identity is complex and unique to each person and are committed to providing a safer, affirming space for 2SLGBTQQIA+ individuals, non-dominant cultural experiences and family structures. Our infrastructure as a community and in our work is forged of cultural competence, humility and curiosity, acknowledging the unique experiences of Indigeneity, race, ability, size and gender. Here, your differences are not simply accepted, but recognized and valued as medicine to our collective struggles and maladies.

Commitment to Inclusion and Cultural Competence

  • Intersectionality First: We understand that queer identity intersects with race, ability, size, gender, and heritage. We work to dismantle barriers for those at the margins of our community.
  • Two-Spirit Recognition: We honor the traditional and sacred roles of Two-Spirit people on this land and prioritize Indigenous perspectives in our work.
  • Ongoing Learning: Our team seeks out opportunities to deepen our understanding of barriers around gender-affirming care, shifting community needs and risks, discrimination, and anti-oppression to ensure our service evolves with our community.
  • Community Immersion/QueerCore: ONN is queer-owned and deeply embedded in our community. The vast majority of our entire team identifies as part of the 2SLGBTQQIA+ community. The few that do not have deep experience and/or training with 2SLGBTQQIA+ community and individual needs and clinical concerns. We are not just allies. We are queer family.
  • Cultural Humility: We may have similar identities, but we recognize every person relates to them differently. We don’t make assumptions about how we each experience our unique and personal systems of identity. We are here to learn with openness and repair where mistakes occur. We believe in our capacity to do hard things together toward the end of resilience and solidarity.
  • Privacy & Safety: Your name and pronouns are respected here. We maintain strict confidentiality and provide gender-neutral facilities for the comfort of all visitors.
  • Mitigation of Risk: We are stronger and less at-risk when we are connected and supported. We seek to discover and fortify points of vulnerability in the constellation of our community and selves so that we may be a resilient and formidable community.
